Pilates Information

What is Pilates, and how does it support strength and movement

Pilates is a structured form of exercise that focuses on controlled movement, strength, flexibility and posture. If you are wondering what Pilates is, it is a method designed to improve how your body moves and functions rather than pushing for speed or intensity. Pilates works by strengthening key muscle groups, particularly through the trunk and hips, while improving coordination, balance and movement control.

At Total Care Clinic, Pilates is offered in a calm, supportive environment and is suitable for beginners, people returning to exercise after injury, and those who prefer guided, small-group sessions rather than large-studio classes.

How Pilates Works and Its Benefits

Pilates works by combining controlled movement with breathing and body awareness. Rather than focusing on repetition or performance, exercises are progressed gradually to build strength, improve posture, and enhance joint mobility in a safe, structured manner.

The benefits of Pilates may include improved core strength, better posture, increased flexibility, enhanced balance and greater confidence with movement. Many people also find Pilates helpful for managing stiffness, supporting back health and maintaining long-term mobility.

A supportive approach for beginners

You do not need to be fit or flexible to begin Pilates. Many people attending Pilates at Total Care Clinic are new to exercise or returning after a period of inactivity, and sessions are structured to provide clear instruction and steady progression, with no pressure.

Exercises can be adapted to suit individual ability, making Pilates accessible and supportive rather than intimidating.

Clinical Pilates and Reformer Pilates: what’s the difference?

Pilates at Total Care Clinic is offered through two distinct pathways.

Clinical Pilates is physiotherapist-supervised and delivered in small groups. It is designed for people recovering from injury or surgery, managing pain, or transitioning from physiotherapy to exercise. Sessions focus on rehabilitation, progressive loading and safe return to activity.

Reformer Pilates is instructor-led and focuses on maintaining strength, flexibility and general fitness. Sessions follow a structured level system that begins with Foundations and are suitable for beginners and those looking for a guided alternative to the gym or large studios.

Your clinician or instructor can help guide you toward the most appropriate option.
